This project that started in the early 90’s of the 20th century, had on its base a centenary estate where their family has been producing Port since the last years of the 19th century. Quinta do Portal properties are located in the Cima-Corgo subregion, an area that has been showing very good balance regarding its resistance to climate changes. The vineyards are spread by 5 estates - Quinta do Portal, Quinta do Confradeiro, Quinta dos Muros, Quinta da Abelheira and Quinta das Manuelas - in a total of 100 ha under vines. The different altitudes and solar exposures and the variety of grape varieties allow them to produce excellent grapes that produce a diversity of wines of great quality. The wine is aged for 4 years in barrel. It still has lot of fresh fruit on the nose but already with some nutty notes. This wine is mostly enjoyed as an apéritif, slightly chilled. It also works well as a dessert wine for those who prefer a lighter style of wine. "Named Tawny for its colour due to the ageing in oak, it reveals a dried fruits and raisins aroma. The smoothness and balance on the palate, give us a good idea of the slowly ageing process. It has the complexity from the Tawnies but still some irreverence from of a young Port." Paulo Coutinho (Winemaker) Tawny ports are a wonderful complement to Peking duck or Shanghai hairy crab. They are also an excellent partner to dishes with bold sauces featuring cherry or dark berries. Serve tawny ports with hard, salty cheeses such as aged cheddar, aged gouda, parmesan, grano padano and Pecorino. To pair a tawny port with dessert think of traditional holiday offerings like pecan pie, pumpkin pie or a cheesecake swirled with caramel. Crème Brûlée, German chocolate cake, bread pudding, brittle and candied nuts are also outstanding choices Vegan

Port Quinta do Portal, LBV (Late Bottled Vintage) Port, is made from a mixture of several grape harvests, and grown on soils with a high content of granite and slate. LBV Port differs from the vintage that is aged in old oak barrels from 4 to 6 years. Prolonged contact with the wood softens the wine, making it more fragrant, elegant and rich. The wine has an elegant structure and reveals nice, juicy fruit with dominant tones of ripe cherries. Long aftertaste different intriguing complexity. In the wonderful fruit and berry aroma is dominated by shades of mature plums in the frame of the notes of cinnamon and other spices. Port as a digestive is good in its pure form, but also in combination with cheese, chocolate or a cigar! 20% abv Vegan
  • Smith Woodhouse was founded in 1784 when Christopher Smith, Lord Mayor of London, created a small company to ship Port from the Douro valley. Shortly after, he was joined by the Woodhouse brothers. The amalgamation of the Smith and Woodhouse families over 200 years ago gave this highly reputable company its name. Another brand in the Symington family portfolio and, while it might not have top-flight status, it is without doubt a pretender with five members of the Symington family currently engaged in the management of Smith Woodhouse. The 1998 Smith Woodhouse Madalena is a rich, opulent style of Single Vineyard Vintage Port with lots of forward, ripe fruits and an intense, long palate. There are intense flavours of blackberry jam, sour cherry marmalade, some overripe blackcurrant, a little bit of spicy bitterness and a hint of graphite. The acidity is well in balance with the body and the tannins seem to be getting pretty much resolved and smooth at this point. The finish is quite firm and noticeably drier than the mid-palate with long and rather savory flavours of peppery spice, graphite, some crunchy dark berries and a touch of ripe plums. Absolutely superb! The traditional accompaniments to vintage port are stilton, and/or walnuts, dried fruits such as moscatel raisins or fresh Medjool dates, but why not try duck confit or top quality chocolate!
  • Taylor Fladgate Managing Director, Adrian Bridge, announced: “The success of the earlier Taylor Fladgate Historical Limited Editions, led us to launch the third in this collection of historical bottles. These editions pay tribute to the long and rich history of Port, as well as continuing our long-standing tradition of innovation. Presented in bespoke, collectable bottles in wooden boxes, these limited editions are designed to appeal to both existing and new Port consumers and collectors.” He adds: “The elegant and historical presentation make it the gift anyone would like to receive”. At the beginning of the 18th century, bottles were hand blown and bulbous in shape. They could not be laid on their sides and were therefore unsuitable for long term ageing. Instead, they were used mainly to convey the wine from the wine merchant’s cask to the consumer’s table. Because bottles were expensive, they were re-used and often displayed the crest or initials of their owner. As the 18th century progressed, bottles became taller and more cylindrical. The early bulbous ‘onion’ shape gradually evolved into a more elongated, straight-sided bottle with a longer neck. The first stage in this evolution was the appearance of the ‘mallet’ shaped bottle which had become well established in England by around 1730. Like their predecessors, the first ‘mallet’ bottles were squat in shape. Their sides were often tapered towards the shoulder rather than completely parallel. However, by around 1750, the ‘mallet’ bottle had developed a more cylindrical form. This Limited Edition bottle is inspired by the ‘mallet-cylinder’ bottle from that period, the immediate predecessor of today’s cylindrical wine bottle. Tinta Barroca and Tinta Roriz and Tinto Cão and Touriga Francesa and Touriga Nacional: This blend was carefully put together for this limited edition from specially selected Ports from Taylor’s extensive aged Tawny stocks, aged in seasoned oak Port pipes. Its character is unique for this bottling, with the characteristic Taylor’s richness and with its distinctive grip on the finish. The wine is a skilfully blended Tawny Port, harmonious and balanced, with all the intensity and finesse derived from ageing in seasoned oak casks. Deep reddish-brown hue at the centre with a narrow brick coloured rim. The mature, opulent nose opens with a warm redolence of coffee, butterscotch and dried fruit, with notes of plum and raisin. Around this rich, mellow core are layers of spicy, woody and nutty aroma, as well as discreet floral scents, giving the wine an intricate, subtle and seductive complexity. On the palate it is round and dense, with a smooth silky texture. This combines with luscious toffee and preserved fruit flavours which continue into the long, warming finish. This wine is an impressive showcase of the traditional skills of cask ageing and blending, with each component beautifully integrated and bringing an extra dimension of aroma and flavour. This wine is ready to drink and does not require decanting. The wine benefits from being served slightly chilled, between 12ºC to 16ºC. A delicious dessert wine, and combines particularly well with flavours of almonds, berry fruit or dark chocolate. It can also be enjoyed as an accompaniment for rich, blue veined cheeses. It is excellent at the end of the meal, as a crowning moment of an enjoyable evening, served on its own or with a plate of walnuts or roasted almonds 20% abv
