Vasco & The Explorers Touriga Nacional 2016, Coastal Region South Africa

In stock

Another wine on our list from Richard Kelley MW (aka ‘The Liberator) who bottles under his own label interesting small parcels of South African wine from top cellars.
Abraham Izak Perold was born in 1880 in Cape Town. Clearly a very bright boy, he studied Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry at Victoria College in Stellenbosch before going on to obtain a PhD in Germany in 1904. For the next two years, Abraham travelled widely, exploring France in depth and conducting what could be considered as the 20th Century’s equivalent of the Grand (viticultural) Tour of Europe. He returned to the Cape with a knowledge of colloquial Spanish, Portuguese and Italian to add to his fluent French, German, English and Afrikaans.
A Portuguese variety that is being to like its new home in South Africa as it is perfectly suited to the Mediterranean climate out there.
Deeply coloured, concentrated bramble fruits with hints of spice and manageable tannins, and shows the potential of the great Port grape when producing unfortified red wine.
Try with twice cooked pork belly with noodle chow chow, tripas de moda do porto, goat in a peppery sauce or Chinese mock duck in a blackbean sauce with mushroom rice
