Quinta do Portal is a family fine winemaking company that embraced with passion the ‘Boutique Winery’ concept. They proudly produce DOC Douro wines, premium Port Wines and Moscatel. This project that started in the early 90’s of the 20th century, had on its base a centenary estate where their family has been producing Port since the last years of the 19th century.
Quinta do Portal properties are located in the Cima-Corgo subregion, an area that has been showing very good balance regarding its resistance to climate changes. The vineyards are spread by 5 estates – Quinta do Portal, Quinta do Confradeiro, Quinta dos Muros, Quinta da Abelheira and Quinta das Manuelas – in a total of 100 ha under vines. The different altitudes and solar exposures and the variety of grape varieties allow them to produce excellent grapes that produce a diversity of wines of great quality.
The wine is aged for 4 years in barrel. It still has lot of fresh fruit on the nose but already with some nutty notes. This wine is mostly enjoyed as an apéritif, slightly chilled. It also works well as a dessert wine for those who prefer a lighter style of wine.
“Named Tawny for its colour due to the ageing in oak, it reveals a dried fruits and raisins aroma. The smoothness and balance on the palate, give us a good idea of the slowly ageing
process. It has the complexity from the Tawnies but still some irreverence from of a young Port.”
Paulo Coutinho (Winemaker)
Tawny ports are a wonderful complement to Peking duck or Shanghai hairy crab. They are also an excellent partner to dishes with bold sauces featuring cherry or dark berries.
Serve tawny ports with hard, salty cheeses such as aged cheddar, aged gouda, parmesan, grano padano and Pecorino.
To pair a tawny port with dessert think of traditional holiday offerings like pecan pie, pumpkin pie or a cheesecake swirled with caramel. Crème Brûlée, German chocolate cake, bread pudding, brittle and candied nuts are also outstanding choices
