Teliani is an old winery dating back to the 1800s and they have survived the various incursions into Georgia from their northern neighbours including the Soviet invasion of the 1920s. They still produce a lot of wine for the Russian market.
They have a team of innovative young winemakers who are given the time, equipment, fruit and support they need to create really exciting things, and we think some of that is evident in the selection we have here.
Wine is made from Georgia’s indigenous grape variety – Saperavi (this is a teinturier grape which means that it is red colour all the way through making wines deep in colour), which is hand harvested from the Kakheti Region (East Georgia). Wine undergoes 7-10 days of fermentation on skins. Once fermentation is complete, skins are removed from the wine. 50,000 bottles were produced.
Saperavi is often compared to Malbec, Cabernet Franc and even Gamay depending on how it is made. In this case we are firmly go in a slightly different direction of a cooler climate Syrah! – a strikingly deep purple colour, bright and juicy with fresh crunchy dark berry flavours, white pepper and perfectly balanced acidity.
The wine pairs well with spicy sausage stew, a juicy burger and barbequed meats
